About Lower Silesian Voivodeship
Lower Silesian Voivodeship offers a distinct choice between the rounded, granite ridges of the Karkonoski Park Narodowy and the labyrinthine sandstone formations of the Park Narodowy Gór Sto²owych. In the Karkonoski range, walkers encounter wide, exposed paths over peat bogs and granite debris, where the vegetation is stunted by high winds. In contrast, the Gór Sto²owych landscape consists of flat-topped mesas dissected by deep, narrow fissures, where the underfoot terrain shifts to sandy soil and damp passages between towering rock pillars.

To the west, the Izerski Park Ciemnego Nieba offers gentler, rolling terrain dominated by spruce forests and peat meadows. Walkers here will notice the dark, acidic water of the peat bogs and a network of gravel forestry tracks that are easier underfoot than the rocky scrambles found in the granite areas. These western hills lack the sharp, dramatic drops of the central peaks, providing a more uniform, forested walking environment.
The region's appearance is shaped by its geological variety, with hard granite resisting erosion to form the high domes of the Karkonosze, while softer sedimentary layers have eroded into the blocks and towers of the Table Mountains. In October, the beech forests on the lower slopes of these ranges turn a deep copper, contrasting with the dark green spruce of the higher elevations. Popular trailheads can become busy on weekends, but the extensive network of marked paths allows for quieter walking on the connecting ridges.
