Mark special points along walking routes and share them with other walkers. From information points to parking spots — turn every route into an interactive experience!
What are Highlights?
Highlights are special points you can place on the map along a walking route. Think of a scenic viewpoint, a historic building, a parking spot, or a warning for a tricky stretch.
Each highlight appears as a recognizable icon on the map. Tap it to read more information, such as a description, the type and optionally a number.
Highlights are created by the community and approved by our team before they become visible to everyone.
Types of Highlights
There are different types of highlights available. Each type has its own icon on the map so you can see at a glance what it is.
Information point
For background information about a location, such as historical facts, nature info or cultural stories.
Information points are shown as a black shield with an "i" or a number — perfect for numbered routes.
Parking
Indicate where walkers can park their car.
Tap a parking highlight to navigate directly via Google Maps or Apple Maps.
Dangerous point
Warn walkers about dangerous situations along the route.
Think of steep descents, busy crossings or slippery paths.
Event types
Organising a walking event or guided route? These types are especially useful:
First aid
Mark where first aid is available along the route.
Stamp post
Indicate where participants can get their stamp card stamped.
Checkpoint
Mark checkpoints along your event route.
Start
Mark the starting point of an event or organised walk.
Finish
Mark the end point of an event or organised walk.
Other
Does your point not fit an existing type? Use "other" with a suitable icon.
How do I add a highlight?
Open the map of a route
Go to the full map view of a route in the app.
Long-press the map
Press the spot where you want to place the highlight. A menu opens where you can choose "Add highlight".
Choose the highlight type
Select the type that best fits your point. Standard types are always visible; event types can be shown separately.
Fill in the details
Give the highlight a name, optionally a description and a number. You can also change the icon and set whether the point should always be visible on the map.
Note: if a route is not editable, only the route owner can add highlights. After creating it, your highlight is reviewed by our team before it becomes visible to everyone.
Viewing information
Tap a highlight icon on the map to view the details. You will then see:
The icon, name and type of the highlight
Optional extra information about the point
For parking spots you can navigate directly via Google Maps or Apple Maps
Via the menu in the top right of the detail view you can also:
Report a highlight as non-existent or in the wrong location (you can indicate a new location on the map)
Suggest an update to the name, description or type of a highlight
Highlights for events and theme routes
Highlights are especially useful when you offer an organised walk or cultural route. Use them to give participants extra information about points along the route.
For walking events
Organising a walking event? Use highlights to enrich your route:
- • Start & Finish — clearly mark the start and end point
- • First aid posts — show where first aid is available
- • Stamp posts — indicate where participants can stamp their card
- • Checkpoints — mark checkpoints along the route
- • Parking — help participants find the right parking spot
For cultural routes
Creating a route with a cultural or educational theme? Use information points to tell your story:
- • Place numbered information points along your route
- • Add a description to each point with background information
- • Tell about historic buildings, nature, art or local stories
- • Walkers tap each point along the way to read the information
Practical tips
Use numbering
Give information points a number so walkers know the order. Each point gets a black shield with the number.
"Always show" for important points
Turn on "Always show on the map" for crucial points such as start, finish and first aid. Other points only appear at a certain zoom level.
Mark dangerous points
Warn walkers about crossings, steep stretches or other dangerous situations along the route.
Add a parking spot
From a parking highlight, walkers can navigate directly via Google Maps or Apple Maps. Handy for routes outside the city!
Write clear descriptions
The more context you give, the more valuable the highlight is for other walkers. Include special details and practical information.
Choose the right icon
Each highlight type has a default icon, but you can override it. Choose an icon that best represents the point.
Approval and visibility
Created
When you create a highlight:
- • It is only visible to you
- • It shows "Waiting for approval"
- • It is immediately visible on the map when you are logged in
Review
Our team reviews your highlight:
- • Is the location correct?
- • Is the information accurate?
- • Does the type match the point?
Approved
After approval:
- • Visible to all users
- • Appears on the map with the route
- • Other walkers benefit from it!
Frequently asked questions
Can everyone add highlights?
On editable routes anyone can add highlights. On non-editable routes only the route owner can place highlights.
How long does approval take?
We try to review highlights as quickly as possible. In the meantime the highlight is only visible to you.
What if a highlight is no longer correct?
Tap the highlight and use the report function via the menu. You can report it as non-existent, correct the location, or suggest a text change.
Can I turn highlights off on the map?
Yes! In the map layer settings you can turn highlights on and off, just like benches and other map layers.
What is the difference between "always show" and normal?
Highlights with "always show" are visible at every zoom level. Highlights without this setting only appear when you zoom in far enough on the map.
Can I navigate to a parking highlight?
Yes! Parking highlights show a button that opens Google Maps or Apple Maps to navigate there directly.
