The best hiking routes in Komárom-Esztergom

Komárom-Esztergom offers a landscape shaped by the Danube, where the terrain transitions from flat, watery floodplains to steep, forested hills. Walkers must choose between two distinct environments. If you prefer wooded climbs, limestone paths, and elevated views over the river bend, the eastern section near the Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park is the natural choice. Here, the trails climb through dense beech and oak forests, where the limestone underfoot can feel rocky and uneven.

In contrast, the lowland areas along the Slovak border offer a completely different walking experience. If you prefer flat, unpaved dirt tracks and grassy dikes, the areas near the Chránená krajinná oblasť Dunajské luhy are more suitable. This riverine landscape consists of side channels, gravel beds, and willow forests, where the ground is mostly soft silt and clay. It is a quiet, horizontal landscape where the focus is on wetlands rather than hills.

This region does not have high mountain peaks or deep alpine valleys; the hills are modest and the floodplains are heavily managed for forestry and flood control. In May, the forest floor in the Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park is covered in wild garlic, while the river paths near Chránená krajinná oblasť Dunajské luhy are often lush with new green growth. The busier trails concentrate around the historic towns, leaving the remote riverbanks and higher forest paths relatively quiet.
