Chránená krajinná oblasť Dunajské luhy offers a landscape shaped entirely by the shifting waters of the Danube river system. Unlike the mountainous terrain found in most Slovak national parks, this protected area is flat, consisting of a network of river branches, wetlands, and alluvial forests. Walkers will find themselves navigating a mix of damp woodland paths, gravel dikes, and muddy tracks that run parallel to the main riverbed and its side arms.

The underfoot conditions vary significantly between the dense floodplain forests and the open dikes. In the forested sections, the ground is soft clay and silt, often covered with leaf litter, where willow and poplar trees dominate the canopy. On the elevated dikes, the surface is hard-packed gravel or asphalt, providing stable footing but offering little shade. These dikes allow you to see how the river has been engineered, contrasting with the wilder, flooded sections where fallen trees and standing water show the natural dynamics of the Danube.

During the spring months, particularly in April and May, high water levels often submerge the lower forest paths, requiring walkers to stick to the higher dikes. While the main paved routes near Bratislava can be busy with cyclists and inline skaters, the unpaved forest tracks deeper in the floodplain are much quieter, offering a direct encounter with the dense undergrowth and river marshes.
