About Parco Interprovinciale di Montioni

Parco Interprovinciale di Montioni is a dense expanse of Mediterranean oak forest stretching across the hills between Massa Marittima and Suvereto. Unlike the open pine groves of the nearby Tuscan coast, this interior park is characterized by thick, continuous canopy cover, dominated by holm oak and deciduous oak trees. The terrain consists of gently rolling hills rather than steep mountain peaks, offering a network of shaded woodland tracks. Walkers will find a landscape shaped by centuries of charcoal burning and alum mining, with old stone ruins, abandoned quarries, and circular charcoal-burning platforms still visible directly alongside the paths.

Underfoot, the trails are primarily packed dirt, stony forest tracks, and old mule carts paths. These routes can be uneven with loose limestone rocks and exposed tree roots, requiring stable footwear. There are no boardwalks or paved promenades here; the experience is one of deep woodland immersion. Because of the dense tree cover, wide panoramic views are rare, but the forest itself provides constant shade, making it a distinct alternative to the exposed coastal trails nearby.

In May, the understory of the park comes alive with blooming Mediterranean shrubs like cistus and heather, filling the damp woodland air with a distinct herbal scent. The park is generally quiet, though the main access points near the village of Montioni can see more visitors on weekends. Choosing to walk here means trading coastal sea views for a quiet, shaded journey through a working historical forest.
