About Nette, Niersaue, Niersgraben, Schleck, Aerbecker Bach, Hetzerter Beek, Moorbeek, Langdorfer Beek und Dorfbeek
This low-lying borderland corridor of Nette, Niersaue, Niersgraben, Schleck, Aerbecker Bach, Hetzerter Beek, Moorbeek, Langdorfer Beek und Dorfbeek is defined by its dense network of small, slow-flowing streams and drainage ditches. Unlike dry upland forests, this area is a flat, damp basin where water is the dominant feature. You will walk primarily along grassy dykes, unpaved farm tracks, and muddy paths that trace the edges of wet meadows and alder carr forests. The landscape is highly fragmented by agricultural fields, meaning views alternate rapidly between thick riparian woodland and open, ditched pastures.

Walking here reveals how centuries of drainage have shaped the land. The straight, channelised sections of the Niersgraben and various Beeks show where farmers historically redirected water to reclaim fields, while the winding, marshy bends of the Nette and Niersaue retain their natural, boggy character. On the ground, this means you will transition quickly from firm gravel agricultural roads to soft, peat-rich paths where reeds and willows crowd the trail.
This is not a wilderness of vast forests or deep valleys, but a working, semi-natural lowland valley. The paths are generally level, with no significant elevation changes. While the open agricultural tracks can feel exposed, the wooded stream banks offer enclosed, shady walking. In late spring, around May, the damp meadows along the Aerbecker Bach and Moorbeek are easily identified by the bright yellow blooms of marsh marigolds, marking the wettest zones where the paths are often softest underfoot.
