About Naturpark Nuthe-Nieplitz
Naturpark Nuthe-Nieplitz offers a low-lying landscape shaped by glacial meltwaters, located just south of Berlin. Unlike the dense pine plantations common in Brandenburg, this park is defined by its wide, open river valleys, damp meadows, and shallow lakes. Walkers will find a terrain that is almost entirely flat, with only gentle, sandy elevations left behind by ice-age debris. It is not a place for dramatic viewpoints or deep ravines, but rather for observing how water still dictates the vegetation and land use.

Underfoot, the paths vary between soft, sandy tracks on the higher ground and damp, grassy paths through the lowlands. In the wetter sections, particularly around the reed beds of the Blankensee or the marshy pastures of the Nuthe and Nieplitz rivers, boardwalks and raised embankments keep your boots out of the mud. The transition from dry, open pine-oak woods to waterlogged alder fens is sudden, meaning a short walk can cover several distinct habitats.
In late autumn, particularly around November, the open fields and shallow waters become major resting sites for thousands of migrating wild geese and cranes, which are easily observed from dedicated wooden screens. While the lakeside paths near the villages can attract local day-trippers on weekends, the deeper forest tracks and the paths alongside the drainage ditches remain quiet, offering straightforward walking on well-marked agricultural and forestry tracks.
