About Maridalen landskapsvernområde

Maridalen landskapsvernområde offers a distinct contrast to the dense, hilly spruce forests that dominate the rest of the Oslo marka. This protected valley is characterized by a wide, flat agricultural basin shaped by ancient glacial deposits, where open fields and pastures meet the edges of Maridalsvannet lake. Walkers will find a landscape of cultural fields, traditional wooden barns, and pockets of deciduous woodland, rather than the rugged wilderness found further north.

Underfoot, the terrain is gentle and highly accessible, consisting mostly of wide gravel roads, dirt farm tracks, and occasional grassy paths. There are no steep climbs or rocky scrambles here. Instead, the routes follow the natural contours of the valley floor, making it a straightforward area for walking. The eastern side of the valley features more forested paths with exposed tree roots, while the western side remains open and flat.

In May and June, the valley floor comes alive with wildflowers along the field margins, highlighting the area's active farming heritage. While the shores of Maridalsvannet are protected to safeguard the city's drinking water, preventing direct access to the shoreline, the elevated tracks provide clear views across the water. The area near the medieval church ruins of Margaretakirken can be busy with local visitors, but the paths extending toward the northern forests offer a quieter experience.
