About Egge

The Egge is a heavily forested low mountain ridge in Germany, running north to south as a narrow, wooded spine. Unlike the broader, open plateaus of nearby regions, this area is defined by its dense, continuous canopy of beech and spruce trees, broken only by sandstone rock formations and narrow clearings. Walking here means following a long, central crest trail or navigating the steep, wooded flanks that drop off into the valleys on either side.

Underfoot, the paths alternate between soft forest soil, stony tracks littered with sandstone fragments, and occasional muddy passages where water drains slowly from the ridge. The eastern slopes are generally steeper and more rugged, featuring exposed rock faces, while the western side slopes more gently. You will notice how the vegetation changes from managed timber forests to moss-covered rock crevices and damp ravine woods as you move down the slopes.

This is a landscape of deep shade and enclosed woodland views rather than wide, open vistas. While the main ridge trail attracts regular foot traffic, the side paths descending into the lateral valleys are often quieter. In late spring, around May, the fresh green of the beech leaves dominates the canopy, while autumn brings a heavy leaf litter that covers the rocky paths.
