About De Biesbosch
De Biesbosch is a freshwater tidal delta where the landscape is shaped entirely by water levels and clay. Unlike dry sandy forests or open heathlands, this park consists of a labyrinth of creeks, willow forests, and reed beds. Walking here means navigating a mix of paved dikes, grassy paths, and muddy tracks that can become waterlogged depending on the tides. You will notice a distinct lack of old-growth oak or beech forests; instead, the vegetation is dominated by fast-growing willow trees and tall reeds that thrive in the wet, clay-heavy soil.

The park is divided into several zones with different walking conditions. The northern sections near Werkendam feature more structured, grassy paths along old polders and willow coppices, where the ground is relatively firm. In contrast, the southern and western parts near Dordrecht are much wetter, often requiring you to use wooden boardwalks or stepping stones to cross tidal creeks. Because of the dense network of waterways, many land-based paths are dead ends, meaning you often have to retrace your steps rather than completing a simple circular loop.
While some central trailheads near the visitor centres can be busy with families and cyclists, the outer grassy dikes offer a quieter experience. There are no hills or elevated viewpoints in De Biesbosch; the terrain is entirely flat, and your views are constantly framed by water and dense bankside vegetation. In late summer, particularly in August, the yellow marsh marigolds are replaced by tall purple loosestrife along the banks, which is the most visible seasonal change you will encounter from the footpaths.
