About Tuntsan erämaa-alue
Tuntsan erämaa-alue offers a stark, open landscape in the northern part of Salla, characterized by gently rolling fell tops and vast areas of sparse, fire-damaged forest. Unlike the dense spruce woods found further south, this wilderness is defined by the remnants of a massive forest fire from the mid-twentieth century, leaving large areas of open terrain where silver-grey dead pines still stand among regenerating birch scrub. Hikers will find the terrain dominated by low-growing shrubs, crowberry, and reindeer lichen, which cover the dry, gravelly soil of the higher elevations.

Underfoot, the terrain varies from dry, stony fell paths to wet, peat-filled depressions in the lower valleys. There are very few marked trails or boardwalks in this wilderness, meaning walkers must be comfortable navigating across open, pathless ground and crossing boggy mires without assistance. The soil on the ridges is firm and sandy, making for relatively straightforward walking, but the lack of distinct tracks requires constant map reading.
In August and September, the dwarf shrubs turn vibrant shades of red and yellow, making this a distinct period to observe the low-lying vegetation. The area lacks high, jagged peaks, offering instead broad, dome-shaped fells like Tuntsatunturi that provide wide views of the surrounding border country. It is a demanding destination where self-reliance is essential, as there are minimal wilderness huts and no tourist infrastructure.
