About Sallan kansallispuisto

Sallan kansallispuisto is characterized by its ancient, spruce-clad hills, known locally as tunturi, and deep gorges carved by glacial meltwaters. Unlike flatter peatland reserves, this park offers significant elevation changes, though the climbs are steady rather than sheer. The terrain is defined by a contrast between dry, lichen-covered pine forests on the sandy ridges and damp, mossy spruce forests in the lower ravines. You will also encounter open aapa mires, which are crossed via wooden boardwalks to protect the fragile peat.

Underfoot, the trails vary from soft forest loam and pine needle paths to rocky, root-filled climbs on the higher slopes. The quartzite rock of the region is often exposed on the ridges, requiring careful stepping. Wooden steps and gravel have been added to the steepest sections, such as the climb up Iso Pyhätunturi, to prevent erosion. While the main trails near the Sallatunturi tourist area are wide and well-marked, the paths deeper in the park become narrow and rugged.

In September, the ground vegetation turns a deep red and yellow, a seasonal change that is particularly visible on the open fells and mire edges. This park is not a place of jagged alpine peaks or rushing whitewater rivers; instead, it offers a landscape of old-growth boreal forest and quiet, marshy depressions. It is a suitable choice if you prefer walking through dense, silent woodland with occasional wide views over the forested hills stretching toward the eastern border.
