About Rete di riserve Alpi Ledrensi

The Rete di riserve Alpi Ledrensi occupies a steep, transitional landscape between the dry Mediterranean climate of Lake Garda and the damp alpine environment of the inner Trentino peaks. Hikers will notice a rapid shift in vegetation over short distances, moving from olive groves and dry limestone scrub on the lower, south-facing slopes to dense beech and spruce forests higher up. The terrain is defined by sharp elevation changes, limestone cliffs, and the prominent basin of Lake Ledro, which sits as a central geographical feature.

Underfoot, the paths vary from stony mule tracks and old military roads dating from the First World War to narrow, dirt singletracks that can be slick with leaf litter in the forested sections. Unlike the high, barren rock plateaus further north, this area maintains a green, heavily forested character even at its higher elevations, with meadows appearing primarily on the ridges and saddles. The lower valleys are dominated by traditional rural cultivation, while the higher slopes are left to natural forest regeneration.

In late spring, particularly around May, the alpine meadows of Tremalzo are known for a high concentration of endemic wildflowers that emerge as the snow retreats. The area is generally quieter than the nearby lakeside resorts, though the main lakeside paths and the historical trenches receive regular foot traffic. Walkers should expect sustained climbs on most routes, as flat walking is largely confined to the immediate shores of Lake Ledro.
