About Oulangan kansallispuisto

Oulangan kansallispuisto is defined by its deep river valleys, steep dolomite cliffs, and northern boreal forests. Unlike the flat peatlands common in other parts of northern Finland, this park features a rugged topography shaped by water cutting through ancient bedrock. The landscape is dominated by the Oulankajoki and Kitkajoki rivers, which have carved out dramatic gorges and created a microclimate where rare arctic and southern plant species grow side by side on the calcareous soil.

Underfoot, walkers will encounter a mix of terrain types. The main trails are well-established, featuring long sections of wooden boardwalks over damp mires, sturdy suspension bridges spanning the rushing rivers, and steep wooden stairs to navigate the gorge walls. Away from the water, the paths climb onto sandy pine ridges where the ground is dry, carpeted with lichen and bearberry. The presence of limestone means the soil is exceptionally fertile, resulting in lush herb-rich forests that contrast sharply with the barren pine heaths.

This is a landscape of rushing water and vertical rock faces rather than open fells or high mountain peaks. Visitors should expect significant elevation changes along the riverbanks, but no vast panoramic views above the treeline. The park is highly accessible, which means the famous suspension bridges and waterfall viewpoints near Juuma can be busy, while the northern wilderness sections toward the wilderness huts offer a much quieter forest experience.
