The best hiking routes in Kemihaaran erämaa-alue

Kemihaaran erämaa-alue is a roadless wilderness in eastern Lapland defined by vast peat bogs, isolated spruce mires, and low, gently sloping pine ridges. Unlike neighboring areas with high, bare fells, this reserve is dominated by flat, waterlogged mires and dense river valleys where the Kemijoki headwaters begin. Walking here requires navigating trackless terrain, as there are no marked trails, boardwalks, or bridges across the numerous streams.

Underfoot, the ground alternates between soft, sinking peat moss in the open bogs and thick, mossy forest floors under the spruce canopy. Hikers must rely entirely on map and compass skills to find natural crossing points over the wet mires and small rivers. The landscape is shaped by slow drainage, meaning large sections of the terrain remain saturated throughout the summer months, particularly in July and August.

This wilderness offers no services or maintained wilderness huts within its boundaries, making it suitable only for self-sufficient hikers. It is a place of low-lying, wet forest and bog rather than dramatic mountain vistas.
