Wigierski Park Narodowy is defined by its post-glacial topography, where the massive Lake Wigry and dozens of smaller forest lakes, known as suchary, shape the walking routes. The terrain is gently rolling rather than hilly, characterized by moraine hills that slope down into peat bogs and damp spruce forests. Walkers will notice a distinct contrast between the dry, pine-dominated sandy tracks on the higher ground and the damp, mossy soils of the low-lying wetlands.

Underfoot, the trails vary from wide, sandy forest roads that remain firm to narrow, wooden boardwalks designed to carry walkers over the fragile peat bogs and marshy shores. These boardwalks allow close observation of the transition from open water to thick sphagnum moss carpets.
