The best hiking routes in Tyresta nationalpark

Tyresta nationalpark consists of a vast, gently rolling plateau of ancient pine forest, rocky outcrops, and peat bogs. The landscape is defined by its rugged, glaciated terrain where thin soils support gnarled pines, some several centuries old. Walkers will notice a stark contrast between the dry, moss-covered granite ridges and the dark, wet spruce valleys that lie between them. A massive forest fire in 1999 left a large central area of silver, standing deadwood, which is now thick with emerging birch and pine saplings.

Underfoot, the terrain varies significantly depending on your choice of path. The main entrance at Tyresta by offers wide, gravelled wheelchair-accessible paths that lead to nearby lakes like Bylsjön. Deeper into the park, the trails turn into narrow, uneven tracks dominated by exposed tree roots, loose stones, and bare granite slabs. Wet peatlands and boggy depressions are crossed using wooden boardwalks, which can be slippery when damp.

This park is not a place of dramatic peaks or deep gorges, but rather a dense, labyrinthine woodland where navigation relies on following the clear color-coded trail markers. The areas closest to the main trailheads are often busier with families and day-trippers, while the northern and eastern paths toward Årsjön and the Baltic coast offer a quieter, more solitary experience.
