About Riisitunturin kansallispuisto

Riisitunturin kansallispuisto is characterized by its gently sloping fells and extensive slope bogs, which are particularly damp and thick with moss. Unlike flat peatlands, these mires cling to the hillsides due to the high humidity and cool climate of this part of Posio. Walkers will find a landscape dominated by spruce forests that thin out as the trail climbs toward the open summits. Underfoot, the terrain alternates between damp forest soil, rocky paths on the higher ridges, and wooden boardwalks laid across the wettest sections of the bogs.

In the winter months, from December to April, the park is known for the heavy accumulation of hard-packed snow and ice on the spruce trees, turning the forest into a dense field of white pillars. In summer, the damp ground supports a rich cover of bilberry and cloudberry plants. The trails are well-defined, but the constant elevation changes, though never steep or alpine, require steady footing over tree roots and loose stones.

This park does not feature deep gorges or rushing rivers. Instead, the appeal lies in the transition from the dense, mossy spruce taiga at the trailheads to the bare, wind-swept fell tops. The main routes can become busy during the peak autumn foliage in September and the winter snow season, while the quieter side trails offer a more solitary experience through the boggy depressions.
