About Parc naturel régional Corbières-Fenouillèdes

Parc naturel régional Corbières-Fenouillèdes presents a transition between the dry Mediterranean scrub and the lower Pyrenean slopes. Walkers will notice a stark contrast between the limestone plateaus of the Corbières, characterized by white rock outcrops and low, aromatic garrigue, and the greener, forested valleys of the Fenouillèdes to the south. Underfoot, the paths vary from loose, stony limestone tracks that require sturdy footwear to softer, shaded dirt paths beneath holm oaks and beech trees.

This landscape is shaped by its complex geology and traditional viticulture. Deep gorges, such as the Gorges de Galamus, cut through the limestone, offering sheer rock walls directly beside the trail. On the lower slopes, ancient stone-walled vineyards break up the wild shrubland. It is not a high-alpine environment; instead, expect rugged, mid-altitude ridges and steep, scrubby ravines rather than snow-capped peaks.

In May, the garrigue is in bloom, filling the air with the scent of wild thyme and rosemary, while the higher forested zones remain cool. The area is generally quieter than the high Pyrenees, though the vicinity of historic castles like Peyrepertuse attracts more foot traffic.
