Underfoot, the terrain changes significantly depending on your chosen path. The interior forest tracks are mostly firm gravel or packed earth, though low-lying areas near Esrum Sø often require navigating damp clay or wooden boardwalks over peat bogs. Along the coast, the paths transition into soft sand and gravel, demanding more effort. The landscape still bears the visible marks of its historical use, with straight, intersecting riding paths designed for par force hunting cutting through the otherwise organic curves of the glacial hills.
This park does not offer dramatic mountain vistas or deep gorges, but rather a quiet, enclosed woodland experience that opens up suddenly to wide lake views. While popular spots near the historic castles and lake shores can attract many visitors, the deeper forest interiors and eastern wetland trails remain much quieter. In May, the fresh green canopy of the beech trees dominates the interior, while the coastal heaths are best appreciated for their low-lying scrub and gorse later in the summer.
