About Національний природний парк «Бойківщина»

Nacionalnii prirodnii park <<Boikivshhina>> occupies the rolling, medium-altitude ridges of the Ukrainian Carpathians, characterized by dense beech forests and high-altitude meadows known locally as polonynas. Unlike the rocky, jagged peaks found in higher alpine ranges, this landscape consists of long, forested ridges with rounded summits and wide, grassy clearings. Walkers will find a terrain dominated by clay-rich forest soils and gravelly tracks that follow the natural contours of the slopes, rather than steep, exposed scrambles.

The forest composition changes visibly as you gain elevation. The lower slopes are dominated by mixed beech and fir stands, where the forest floor is thick with leaf litter and moss. As you climb toward the ridges, the trees become shorter and more wind-stunted, eventually giving way to open grasslands. These upper meadows are used for seasonal grazing, which keeps the vegetation low and provides wide views of the surrounding parallel ridges, showing the classic folded structure of the outer flysch Carpathians.

Underfoot, the paths are a mix of dirt forestry tracks, grassy ridge trails, and occasional stony paths near the stream beds. These routes can become slick and muddy after wet weather, requiring sturdy footwear with good grip. While the main ridge trails are relatively easy to follow, signposting can be sparse in the deeper valleys, making a reliable map essential for navigating the dense woodland sections.
