About Mysubytta landskapsvernområde

Mysubytta landskapsvernområde offers a transition between the high alpine peaks of Breheimen and the gentler, birch-clad valley floor of Sprongdalen. This protected landscape is defined by its glacial history, where the retreating ice has left behind vast moraine ridges, gravel flats, and a network of braided meltwater streams. Unlike the rugged, vertical rock walls nearby, the terrain here consists of wide, open valley bottoms and moderate slopes where dwarf birch, willows, and alpine grasses dominate the vegetation.

Underfoot, walkers will find a mix of rocky, uneven footpaths, wet peat soil, and sections of loose glacial gravel. There are no paved paths or boardwalks, meaning you must navigate natural obstacles like stream crossings and boggy depressions directly. The main trail through the area follows the river system, providing a clear line of travel through the valley, though the ground remains rough and requires sturdy footwear.

In July and August, the meltwater from the surrounding glaciers runs high, turning the streams into milky-turquoise torrents that dominate the soundscape. This is a landscape shaped entirely by water and ice, where the vegetation is low-lying and the scale of the valley is immediately apparent from the path. It is a quieter alternative to the busier peak-bagging routes, suited for those who prefer walking along valley floors surrounded by moraine walls rather than climbing steep summits.
