About Loevestein, Pompveld & Kornsche Boezem

Loevestein, Pompveld & Kornsche Boezem offers a transition from river clay plains to enclosed, historic wetlands. Around the medieval castle of Loevestein, the landscape consists of open, grassy floodplains where rivers meet. Here, you walk on unpaved clay paths and dikes, where grazing cattle keep the vegetation short and the terrain is exposed to the river currents. The ground is uneven and shaped by seasonal high water.

Further inland, the character shifts completely at Pompveld and the Kornsche Boezem. Pompveld is a quiet, wooded area featuring an old duck decoy surrounded by damp meadows and dense coppice woods. The paths here are narrower, often grassy or muddy, lined by willow trees and drainage ditches. This is a structured, reclaimed landscape where water levels are managed closely, creating a sheltered contrast to the open riverbanks.

Kornsche Boezem adds a third element with its historic reed beds and storage basins. Wooden boardwalks and narrow embankments lead you through wet woodland and marshy patches. This area does not offer dry, sandy pine forests or rolling hills; it is a flat, water-dominated territory where you will need sturdy footwear to navigate the soft, low-lying paths.
