The best hiking routes in Krekenavos regioninis parkas

Krekenavos regioninis parkas is defined by the slow-moving NevėŹis River, which has carved a wide, shallow valley through the central Lithuanian plains. Walking here means navigating a landscape of oxbow lakes, wet water meadows, and old oak groves. The terrain is almost entirely flat, offering no steep climbs or dramatic vistas, but rather a close-up view of a river valley that still floods naturally. Underfoot, you will mostly encounter dirt tracks, grassy paths through the meadows, and occasional wooden boardwalks over the marshiest sections near the riverbanks.

Away from the immediate riverbed, the trail network leads into mixed forests dominated by pine, oak, and lime trees. These wooded sections have a firmer, sandier soil profile compared to the clay-heavy floodplains. A distinct feature of this park is the presence of a semi-wild wisent paddock near Pašiliai, where the forest paths allow you to walk close to the enclosures of these large herbivores. The transition from the open, breezy river meadows to the dense, quiet forest canopy provides the main visual variety during a day on the trail.

In late spring, usually around May, the meadows along the NevėŹis are bright green and filled with blooming wildflowers, though some low-lying paths remain damp. The park is generally quiet, with most visitors concentrating around the visitor center in Krekenava and the nearby steel observation tower. Once you walk a kilometer or two into the forest or along the river loops, the crowd thins out significantly, leaving you with a highly typical, peaceful lowland walking experience.
