Dørålen landskapsvernområde is a high-mountain valley landscape shaped heavily by the retreat of the last ice age. Unlike the jagged peaks of nearby regions, this protected area is defined by vast, dry terraces of glacial drift, kettle holes, and prominent eskers that run along the valley floor. The landscape is dominated by light-coloured reindeer lichen, dwarf birch, and sparse pine forests at the lower entrances, creating a pale, open environment where the geological history is visible in every ridge and depression.

Underfoot, walkers will mostly encounter dry, stony tracks and sandy soils that drain quickly, though some lower sections near the Døra river system require navigating wetter, peat-rich ground. There are no paved paths or boardwalk networks here; the trails are natural, often rough with loose stones and exposed tree roots. The terrain is relatively flat along the main valley bottom, making it a gentler alternative to the steep climbs found in the high mountains nearby, though the lack of shelter means the terrain is fully exposed.

In late August and September, the dwarf shrubs turn deep red and yellow, contrasting sharply with the pale lichen. The area is accessible via a toll road, and while the trailheads near the Dørålseter mountain lodges can see regular foot traffic, the side valleys and moraine ridges offer a much quieter walking experience. This is a landscape of subtle glacial features and low vegetation rather than deep gorges or dramatic waterfalls.
