The best hiking routes in Chránená krajinná oblasť Strážovské vrchy

Chránená krajinná oblasť Strážovské vrchy is a rugged limestone and dolomite landscape characterized by its lack of a single central ridge. Instead, walkers will find a labyrinth of steep, isolated crags, deep rocky gorges, and high meadows. The terrain is highly fragmented, meaning paths often transition abruptly from dense beech forests to exposed, rocky outcrops. Underfoot, you will mostly encounter loose limestone scree, packed clay, and steep, stony paths that require careful footwork, especially on the ascents to prominent peaks like Strážov or Vápeč.

The limestone geology is visible everywhere along the trails, forming sharp needles, towers, and small caves directly beside the path. Unlike the higher granite ranges of Slovakia, this area is defined by its karst features, meaning water quickly disappears underground, leaving the higher ridges dry and rocky while springs emerge lower down in the valleys. In May, these dry limestone slopes are covered in flowering mountain plants, while the deep beech woods remain cool and shaded.

This area is not a high-alpine environment, so you will not find vast fields of granite boulders or permanent snowfields here. It is a place of steep, forested hills punctuated by dramatic white cliffs. While the most famous viewpoints like Vápeč can attract local walkers on weekends, much of the extensive trail network through the deeper valleys remains quiet and feels highly secluded.
