About Brannsletta landskapsvernområde

Brannsletta landskapsvernområde offers a distinct walking experience defined by its flat, post-glacial coastal landscape. Unlike the rugged fjords nearby, this protected area consists of a vast raised beach system where parallel gravel ridges run inland from the sea. Walking here means navigating a mosaic of dry, lichen-covered stone ridges and wet, peat-filled depressions that lie between them. There are no high peaks or deep valleys, only a gently undulating terrain that reveals how the land slowly rose from the ocean after the last ice age.

Underfoot, the terrain alternates between firm, stony ground on the ancient shorelines and soft, damp peat in the hollows. While there are no developed boardwalk networks, walkers can follow faint tracks made by reindeer and occasional hikers. The vegetation is low-growing, dominated by dwarf birch, heather, and cloudberry mires, which means your line of sight across the terrain remains unobstructed. In September, the dwarf shrubs turn a deep red, contrasting sharply with the pale reindeer lichen on the ridges.

This area is best suited for those who appreciate subtle geological patterns rather than dramatic mountain climbs. Because the ground can be waterlogged in the depressions, walkers must be prepared to pick their own way through the drier gravel ridges. It is a quiet, exposed landscape where the main appeal lies in observing the systematic, wave-like patterns of the ancient shoreline ridges stretching across the peninsula.
