The best hiking routes in Białowieski Park Narodowy

Białowieski Park Narodowy preserves the last remaining fragments of Europe's primeval lowland forest. Walking here is a lesson in forest decay and regeneration, where massive fallen oak and hornbeam trunks are left to rot on the forest floor, creating a chaotic, multi-layered canopy. Unlike managed plantations, the paths here are often hemmed in by thick undergrowth, fallen timber, and young saplings competing for light in the gaps left by fallen giants. The terrain is largely flat, dominated by damp oak-hornbeam stands and wet alder carrs rather than dramatic ridges or sweeping viewpoints.

Underfoot, the conditions vary from firm dirt tracks in the drier, elevated sections to wooden boardwalks that elevate walkers above the swampy, waterlogged soils of the river valleys. The strictly protected core area is accessible only with a licensed guide, where the trail feels more like a narrow corridor through an untamed wilderness of moss-covered bark and ferns. Outside this core zone, the buffer areas offer freer movement along wider forestry tracks, though the dense wall of trees remains a constant companion.

In late April and May, the forest floor comes alive with wood anemones before the dense canopy closes and plunges the understory into deep shade. Walkers should expect a quiet, enclosed experience where the focus is on the micro-landscape of fungi, ancient bark, and the sounds of woodpeckers, rather than distant horizons or open vistas.
