The best hiking routes in Beigua - Turchino

Beigua - Turchino spans a rugged section of the Ligurian Apennines where the mountains rise abruptly from the Mediterranean coast. The landscape is defined by its sharp contrast between the coastal slopes and the high, windswept ridge line. Walking here means navigating a mix of dense beech forests, open grassy highlands, and vast fields of dark, blocky ophiolite rocks. The geology is visible everywhere underfoot, with serpentine soils supporting specialized, sparse vegetation that differs sharply from the lush valleys below.

Underfoot, the paths are predominantly rocky, rough, and uneven. Walkers should expect steep, stony climbs on loose scree, interspersed with sections of hard-packed dirt and occasional grassy ridges. The ridge path, which follows the Alta Via dei Monti Liguri, offers wide views of the coastline and the sea on one side, and the rolling inland valleys on the other. This is a mountain environment without high alpine peaks, characterized instead by rounded, bare summits and deep, steep-sided ravines.

In late spring, particularly around May, the high meadows bloom with wild pansies and endemic flowers, contrasting with the dark stone. The area is prone to sudden mists that roll in from the sea, rapidly changing the visibility along the ridge. While the main trailheads near the Turchino Pass and the coastal access points see regular foot traffic, the interior paths through the rocky scree fields offer a much more solitary walking experience.
