Probsteier Salzwiesen und Umgebung is a flat coastal wetland area situated along the Baltic Sea, characterized by salt marshes, reed beds, and low-lying pastures. Unlike the sandy cliffs or high dunes found along other parts of this coastline, this reserve is defined by its level, open terrain protected by a sea dike. The landscape is shaped by its brackish water system, where drainage ditches and shallow ponds cut through the meadows, creating a habitat where salt-tolerant plants thrive.

Underfoot, walkers will find a mix of paved asphalt paths along the top of the dike and grassy, sometimes muddy tracks through the inland pastures. The dike path offers elevated views over the Baltic waters on one side and the wet meadows on the other, while the lower inland trails bring you closer to the drainage channels and grazing cattle. There are no forests or significant elevations here, meaning the terrain is entirely exposed to the coastal elements.

In May and June, the salt marshes turn green and are filled with nesting wading birds, which are easily observed from the dike. The area is popular with cyclists and birdwatchers, particularly along the main dike route, while the grassy inland paths tend to be quieter. It is a straightforward landscape for those who prefer level walking without steep climbs, focusing instead on coastal birdlife and marsh vegetation.
