About Parc naturel régional du Perche
Parc naturel régional du Perche is a landscape of gently rolling clay hills, deep beech forests, and small hedged fields known as bocage. Unlike flatter agricultural plains nearby, this area is defined by its damp valleys, sunken lanes, and ancient oak woodlands like the Forêt de Réno-Valdieu. Walking here means navigating a network of clay tracks, damp forest paths, and quiet rural lanes that follow the natural contours of the hills. You will not find dramatic gorges or high peaks, but rather a dense, enclosed countryside where views are framed by thick hedgerows and old stone farmhouses.

Underfoot, the terrain varies between soft forest loam, sticky clay in the low-lying pastures, and firmer flint-strewn tracks on the ridges. The dampness of the valleys supports numerous small streams and marshy meadows, which contrast with the drier, sandy soils found on some of the higher forested ridges. In late April and May, the forest floors of Réno-Valdieu are covered in wild hyacinths, a distinct feature of these older woodlands.
The landscape is shaped by centuries of traditional horse breeding and small-scale farming, which has preserved the dense network of hedges and sunken paths. While the more famous forest trails can attract local walkers on weekends, much of the agricultural bocage remains quiet, offering a steady, undulating walk through a working Norman countryside.
