The best hiking routes in Oberurseler Stadtwald und Stierstädter Heide

The Oberurseler Stadtwald und Stierstädter Heide offers a transition between two distinct landscape types. The northern section consists of the Oberurseler Stadtwald, a dense forest of beech and oak climbing the lower slopes of the Taunus. Here, the paths are mostly wide, gravelled forestry tracks shaded by a high canopy, with occasional damp patches near small woodland streams.

In contrast, the southern portion opens up into the Stierstädter Heide, a flat, sandy heathland. The underfoot shifts to soft sand and narrow dirt paths winding through heather and gorse. This open area exists because of the nutrient-poor, sandy soil, which prevents dense tree growth and supports low-lying shrubs instead.

This area is gently sloping rather than steep, lacking dramatic peaks or deep gorges. It is a local destination where the forested paths offer shade, while the open heath is fully exposed. Walkers should expect busier trails near the forest edges on weekends, while the sandy tracks of the heath are often quieter.
