About Grutte Wielen

Grutte Wielen is a wetland reserve dominated by open water, reedbeds, and low-lying grasslands, located just east of Leeuwarden. Unlike the dry sandy forests or rolling heathlands found in other parts of the country, this landscape is flat, damp, and defined by its history of peat excavation and water management. It is a terrain of wide views over shallow lakes, where the boundary between land and water is constantly blurred by marshy edges and drainage ditches.

For walkers, the experience here is defined by dikes and grassy paths rather than hardened woodland tracks. You will find yourself walking on clay and damp turf, which requires sturdy footwear. There are no boardwalk networks or sandy ridges to elevate you above the wetness; instead, the routes follow the straight lines of the polder dikes, offering a direct look at the managed water levels and the grazing cattle used by It Fryske Gea to keep the grasslands open.

In April and May, the lakeside meadows are loud with the calls of breeding black-tailed godwits and lapwings, making it a highly specific destination for birdwatchers. If you prefer varied topography, dense tree cover, or dry underfoot conditions, this reserve will feel exposed and monotonous. It is best suited for those who want to observe wetland ecology up close along simple, linear waterside paths.
