About Fontanili di Corte Valle Re

Fontanili di Corte Valle Re offers a walk through a highly modified agricultural landscape in the middle of the Reggiano plain, where the flat fields are interrupted by traditional lowland springs known as fontanili. This is not a wild forest or a rolling hill country, but a working rural environment shaped by human hands and water management. Walkers will follow flat dirt tracks and grassy field margins alongside irrigation ditches, with the constant hum of the nearby Milan-Bologna highway reminding you of the area's position in a busy transport corridor.

Underfoot, the paths consist of packed agricultural soil and clay, which can become sticky after rain. The defining feature of this reserve is the resurgence of cool groundwater emerging from the gravelly subsoil into small, clear pools. These springs support localized pockets of aquatic vegetation, reeds, and rows of poplars and willows that cut straight lines across the otherwise open, intensively farmed fields.

In late spring, around May, the contrast between the cultivated crops and the lush, green growth around the active spring heads is most visible. This area is best suited for those interested in historical water engineering and lowland ecology rather than those seeking isolated wilderness or dramatic topography.
