About Viana do Castelo
Viana do Castelo offers two distinct walking landscapes defined by water and granite. If you prefer flat, steady terrain, the paths along the Zona Especial de Conservação do Rio Lima and the Rio Minho follow wide river valleys. Here, the underfoot is mostly packed dirt, gravel, and occasional wooden boardwalks, running past agricultural fields and reed beds. These riverside routes do not offer dramatic climbs, but they provide straightforward, level walking with consistent views of the water.

For steep, rugged terrain, you must head inland toward the Parque Nacional da Peneda-Gerês and the overlapping Serras da Peneda e Gerês. This is a highland landscape of exposed granite dome formations, ancient stone walls, and oak forests. The paths here are stony, uneven, and often follow old paved shepherd trails where you will notice the deep grooves worn by cartwheels over centuries. It is a demanding landscape with significant elevation changes, quite different from the gentle riverbanks.
In the smaller protected area of Corno do Bico, the landscape transitions into a compact, rounded mountain dome covered in dense deciduous woods. Walking here means stepping on a soft carpet of leaf litter and damp soil under a thick canopy, which feels much more enclosed than the exposed, rocky ridges of the main Gerês range. In November, this specific woodland is dominated by the deep yellow and brown hues of falling oak leaves.
