The best hiking routes in Vestland

Vestland's walking terrain is defined by the stark contrast between high-altitude plateaus and deep, water-carved valleys. If you prefer vast, undulating terrain where the horizon is dominated by low ridges and dwarf birch, Hardangervidda nasjonalpark offers immense space underfoot, with paths crossing peat, glacial moraine, and occasional wooden boardwalks over boggy sections. In contrast, Nærøyfjorden landskapsvernområde features steep, near-vertical rock walls rising directly from sea level, where paths are often narrow, stony, and require steady footing on sharp ascents.

For those drawn to ice and rock, the region's glacial parks present different challenges. Jostedalsbreen nasjonalpark is dominated by massive blue ice tongues spilling into green valleys, where the trails are often wet gravel and polished river slabs. Folgefonna nasjonalpark offers similar glacier-dominated landscapes further south, where the damp air keeps the surrounding rocks slick and covered in thick moss. These areas do not offer gentle, rolling woodland walks; they are stark, rocky environments where vegetation is sparse and the ground is mostly bare granite.

Timing your visit is crucial for accessing these heights. In June, high-altitude areas like Skaupsjøen / Hardangerjøkulen landskapsvernområde are still largely covered in deep winter snow, meaning routes are only passable for those equipped for snow-shoeing or ski-touring, whereas the lower fjord-side paths are already clear and lined with spring growth. The well-known viewpoints near the fjords attract more foot traffic, while the higher, rocky interior of Breheimen nasjonalpark remains much quieter due to its demanding, pathless boulder fields.
