The best hiking routes in Nógrád

Nógrád offers a landscape of volcanic ridges and quiet river valleys rather than high alpine peaks. Walkers can choose between the forested volcanic slopes of the Mátrai Tájvédelmi körzet in the east and the gentler, clay-heavy hills of the Chránená krajinná oblasť Cerová vrchovina along the Slovak border. The terrain is characterized by dense oak and beech forests, where the soil underfoot transitions from loose volcanic scree on the ridges to thick clay in the lower valleys.

In the southern part of the county, the Duna-Ipoly Nemzeti Park features steeper limestone and volcanic paths that require steady footwork. In contrast, the flat floodplains of the Ipoly-völgy provide level walking on grassy tracks and sandy alluvial soils. These lowlands are particularly distinctive in April, when the melting snow from the northern hills fills the meadows of the Ipoly-völgy with shallow, seasonal pools.

While well-known viewpoints in the Mátrai Tájvédelmi körzet can attract more visitors on weekends, the border paths of Chránená krajinná oblasť Cerová vrchovina are often quieter. Walkers should expect steep, short climbs over basalt ruins rather than long, sustained mountain ascents.
