About Karlovac County
Karlovac County sits at the transition between the lowlands of central Croatia and the limestone crags of the Dinaric Alps. Walkers will find a landscape shaped by water, where four rivers carve valleys through forested hills before the terrain rises into karst plateaus. This is not a region of high alpine peaks or dramatic mountain ridges, but rather one of dense beech forests, deep gorges, and underground cave systems that dictate how water flows across the surface.

To the south, Nacionalni park Plitvička jezera offers a highly structured walking experience. Here, the underfoot consists of wooden boardwalks and packed gravel paths designed to guide visitors safely past a chain of terraced lakes and travertine barriers. The landscape here is defined by the constant sound of rushing water and the bright turquoise pools, though the most famous viewpoints can become very busy, especially during the peak summer months of July and August.
Outside of the national park, the county offers quieter, more rugged terrain where the paths are often dirt tracks or stony forest trails. In these areas, you will walk through mixed woodlands where sinkholes and limestone outcrops frequently disrupt the forest floor. It is a region suited for those who prefer steady, rolling climbs through shaded canopy rather than open, sweeping vistas.
