The best hiking routes in County Wexford

County Wexford offers a low-lying landscape that lacks the dramatic mountain ranges found elsewhere in Ireland. Instead, walkers will find a mix of long, sandy coastlines and gently rolling agricultural hills. The terrain is shaped by its agricultural heritage, meaning many routes follow quiet tarmac lanes, farm tracks, and grassy paths between active pastures, rather than rugged wilderness trails.

For coastal walking, the eastern shore features wide, sandy beaches backed by marram grass dunes, where the underfoot is soft and shifting. In contrast, the Hook Peninsula in the southwest presents flat, exposed limestone shelves and low cliffs where the path is firmer but uneven. These coastal areas are often busier, especially near the beaches in July, while the inland hills remain much quieter.

Inland, the landscape rises slightly toward the Blackstairs Mountains on the western border, where the paths turn to peat and gravel. Here, the walking is more demanding, though still modest in elevation compared to major European ranges.
