Sweden offers distinct walking environments depending on how far north you travel. In the far northern regions of Norrbottens län and Västerbottens län, the landscape is defined by wide mountain tundra and deep birch valleys. Here, paths are often rough with loose stones and exposed tree roots, requiring careful footwork. Wooden boardwalks are laid across the peat bogs to help you cross the wettest sections. In these northern latitudes, snow can linger on the high passes well into June.
