The best hiking routes in ZPE Cuba

ZPE Cuba is a flat to gently undulating agricultural steppe in the Alentejo region, dominated by dry cereal fields, fallow land, and scattered holm oak woodlands. Unlike the dense forests or coastal dunes found elsewhere in Portugal, this landscape is open, dry, and highly modified by traditional low-intensity farming. Walkers will find a terrain of wide clay and schist tracks, which are hard-packed and dusty in the summer months but turn to heavy, sticky mud after the autumn rains begin in October.

Walking here is a matter of navigating agricultural dirt roads rather than winding forest paths or boardwalks. The landscape is shaped entirely by dryland farming, meaning the vegetation changes dramatically from green, flower-filled pastures in April to pale, sun-baked stubble by July. The lack of natural tree cover means there is very little shade along the routes, making the terrain feel exposed and uniform.
