The best hiking routes in Златията

Златията is a vast, gently rolling loess plateau in northwestern Bulgaria, bounded by the Danube and Tsibritsa rivers. Unlike the forested mountains further south, this landscape is dominated by open agricultural plains and wide, low-lying ridges. The terrain is highly uniform, characterized by deep fertile soils and a lack of natural woodland, which has been almost entirely replaced by large-scale arable fields. Walkers will find a landscape shaped by intensive farming, where long, straight dirt tracks cut through vast expanses of wheat, sunflower, and maize.

Underfoot, the paths consist primarily of packed loess clay, which becomes incredibly sticky and heavy after rain, but bakes into hard, dusty tracks during the dry summer months of July and August. There are no signposted hiking trails, boardwalks, or recreational forests here. Instead, walking in this area means navigating agricultural access roads that follow the field margins and the gentle contours of the plateau, offering long views across the cultivated slopes.

This area is not suitable for those seeking dramatic gorges, rocky peaks, or secluded woodland walks. It appeals instead to those interested in the sheer scale of the Danubian Plain and the rural, working character of the Bulgarian countryside. While the main dirt roads are used by agricultural machinery, the smaller field tracks are generally quiet, offering a straightforward, uncomplicated walking experience across a flat to gently undulating agricultural terrace.
