The best hiking routes in ZEPA A Limia

ZEPA A Limia is a vast, flat agricultural basin in southern Galicia, shaped by the mid-twentieth-century drainage of the historic Laguna de Antela. Walkers will not find deep valleys or rocky peaks here; instead, the landscape is a geometric grid of crop fields, pasture, and drainage canals. The terrain is highly modified, but several restored sand quarries and small wetlands now attract diverse bird populations, which are the primary focus of this protected area.

Underfoot, you will mostly encounter flat, unpaved agricultural tracks, gravel paths, and quiet asphalt lanes. There are no boardwalks or rugged mountain trails. The walking is physically easy but exposed, with very little tree cover to break up the agricultural expanse. In winter, especially around January, the low-lying fields and canals frequently fill with water, partially recreating the original wetland character and attracting thousands of wintering waterfowl.

This area is best suited for birdwatchers and those who appreciate quiet, open rural landscapes rather than dramatic wilderness. You will walk past active farms, irrigation infrastructure, and small patches of oak scrub. It is a working landscape where the primary sounds are agricultural machinery and birdsong, offering a very different experience from the nearby mountainous parks of Galicia.
