About ZEC Bidueiral de Montederramo

ZEC Bidueiral de Montederramo is a protected upland forest area located on the northern slopes of the Serra de Queixa. Unlike the open, heather-dominated heathlands that cover much of the surrounding Galician highlands, this reserve is defined by its dense, high-altitude birch woods. The canopy consists primarily of silver birch, interspersed with rowan, holly, and oak, creating a shaded, enclosed environment that feels distinct from the exposed granite ridges nearby.

Underfoot, walkers will find a network of damp, earth-and-leaf-litter tracks rather than dry, sandy paths. The ground is often carpeted with mosses and ferns, fed by the frequent mists that cling to these north-facing slopes. The terrain is moderately steep, climbing through the forest zones without reaching the rugged, rocky peaks found in higher mountain ranges.

In late autumn, particularly during November, the birch leaves turn a uniform yellow before falling, contrasting sharply with the dark green holly understory. This seasonal shift alters the light levels within the forest, opening up partial views through the trunk lines. It is a quiet, damp woodland walk where the focus remains on the immediate forest structure rather than wide mountain vistas.
