The best hiking routes in Utladalen landskapsvernområde

Utladalen landskapsvernområde is defined by its extreme verticality, where a deep, narrow valley cuts sharply through high mountain terrain. Unlike the flatter plateau walks found elsewhere in Norway, walking here means being hemmed in by steep rock walls that rise almost vertically from the valley floor. The landscape is dominated by rushing water, with several major waterfalls, including Vettisfossen, plunging down the cliffs. The vegetation changes rapidly from lush deciduous forest along the riverbed to sparse birch and bare rock as you gain elevation.

Underfoot, the main track along the valley floor is a gravel road that provides stable footing, but any detour onto the side trails quickly turns into steep, rocky paths. These mountain tracks are often rough, crossing scree slopes and exposed tree roots where stone steps have been laid in the steepest sections. Suspension bridges span the fast-flowing Utla river, connecting the different trail networks.

This area is not a place for wide, rolling views or easy ridge walks. Instead, the experience is focused on the sheer scale of the canyon walls and the constant sound of water. While the lower valley track is straightforward to navigate, ascending the side trails requires steady footing on steep, rocky ground.
