About Tatranský národný park
Tatranský národný park contains the highest elevations in Slovakia, characterized by sharp granite peaks, steep glacial amphitheaters, and deep valleys carved by ice. Unlike the lower, rounded forested hills nearby, this landscape is defined by its verticality and exposed rock. Below the bare summits, you will walk through dense spruce forests that gradually give way to dwarf pine shrubs as the elevation increases. Glacial tarns, or mountain lakes, sit in rocky basins at various altitudes, providing clear landmarks along the trail network.

Underfoot, the paths change from wide, gravel-surfaced forest tracks in the lower valleys to rugged, uneven stone steps and boulder fields higher up. Many of the steeper ascents are secured with metal chains or ladders fixed directly into the rock face, requiring steady footing and hands-on scrambling. The transition from the soft forest floor to hard, unforgiving granite is a constant feature of any ascent here. High passes are often blocked by snow well into June, altering the accessibility of the higher routes.
This is a highly structured alpine environment where walking is strictly confined to marked trails to protect the fragile alpine tundra. While the lower valleys and popular lake basins like Štrbské pleso attract large numbers of visitors, the steep, demanding climbs to the higher peaks and passes offer a much more demanding and rugged experience. You will not find gentle, rolling meadows here; the terrain is consistently steep, rocky, and physically demanding.
