Sundbyholms naturvårdsområde offers a distinct contrast between managed castle grounds and dense, ancient deciduous woodland along the southern shore of Lake Mälaren. The terrain is mostly flat, with gentle ridges formed by glacial moraine. Walkers will find a mix of wide, gravelled paths near the marina and castle, which transition into narrower, earth-and-root tracks once inside the nature reserve.

The area is most notable for its northernmost beech forest, where the canopy creates a deep shade that limits undergrowth, leaving the forest floor open and covered in leaf litter. In May, this floor is briefly covered in wild anemones before the leaves block the light. Elsewhere, the path winds through damp oak woodland where old, gnarly trees have been left to decay naturally, creating a rougher, more enclosed landscape than the manicured lawns near the harbor.

Underfoot, the paths are generally firm but can be uneven due to tree roots and occasional muddy patches in the lower-lying oak sections. While the lakeside paths near the castle and the famous Sigurdsristningen rock carving attract regular visitors, the deeper woodland trails offer a much quieter, enclosed forest experience.
