About Sonfjället

Sonfjället is a massive, isolated granite mountain rising abruptly from the surrounding forest. Unlike the long, flat-topped ridges common in other parts of Härjedalen, this national park is shaped like a giant circular dome cut by a deep central valley, the Sododalen. Walking here means choosing between two distinct environments: the dense, boulder-strewn spruce and birch forests of the lower slopes, or the exposed, rocky alpine tundra above the tree line.

The terrain underfoot is notoriously stony. While lower forest paths feature sections of packed earth and occasional wooden boardwalks over boggy patches, the higher trails quickly turn into fields of large, loose block-scree. These blockfields require constant attention to footing and make for slow progress. The vegetation on the upper slopes is sparse, dominated by dwarf birch, heather, and thick carpets of grey reindeer lichen, which give the landscape its characteristic pale appearance.

This area is not a place for gentle, rolling meadows or easy lakeside strolls. The climbs are steep and direct, particularly when ascending the main peaks like Valfjället. Water is scarce on the higher ridges, so walkers must plan to carry their own supply or rely on the streams in the valley bottoms. In June, patches of old snow often remain in the higher gullies, contrasting sharply with the dark stone and the emerging green of the mountain birches.
