Σελάκανο Ιεράπετρας is a high-altitude basin dominated by one of the most significant pine forests in the Aegean. Unlike the barren, rocky gorges common in eastern Crete, this reserve offers a dense canopy of Calabrian pine, interspersed with holm oaks, maples, and plane trees near the water sources. The landscape is shaped by steep limestone cliffs that hem in the forested valley, creating a enclosed, mountain-basin character rather than open coastal views.

Underfoot, walkers will mostly encounter rough dirt tracks, forest debris, and loose limestone scree. The terrain rises steeply from the valley floor, requiring steady footing on uneven, unpaved paths that wind through the trees. Water channels and small springs feed the vegetation, meaning some sections of the track cross damp ground, a stark contrast to the dry, dusty slopes just outside the forest boundary.
