About Ravensburg und Alter Berg

Ravensburg und Alter Berg offers a walk through a heavily forested hill landscape shaped by limestone geology. Unlike flatter woodland nearby, this area is defined by its steep slopes and deep ravines, where the elevation changes require steady footing. The canopy is dominated by mature beech trees, which create a dense shade that limits undergrowth on the forest floor, leaving the limestone soil and leaf litter exposed along the paths.

Underfoot, walkers will find a mix of packed dirt tracks and narrower, stony paths that can become slippery after rainfall due to the clay-rich soil. The terrain is characterized by these natural, uneven surfaces rather than paved walkways. As you ascend toward the ridge of the Alter Berg, the forest thins slightly, revealing the limestone outcrops that form the backbone of this ridge line.

In May, the forest floor is briefly green with early spring growth before the beech canopy fully closes. This reserve is suited for those who prefer quiet, shaded woodland climbs over open panoramic views, as the dense tree cover remains the dominant feature throughout the walk.
